Along with about many hundreds (thousands?) of people, I picked up the phone two weeks ago to ask Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO) to insist that witnesses and documents be presented in the impeachment trial in the Senate. I left a message on voicemail, but I am not holding my breath. It’s like chasing a cloud.
But Senator Gardner certainly is in the news, with columns in The New York Times and The Colorado Sun. The headline above is the headline on a column in today’s Times. I would have laughed at that, but this trial is too deadly serious.
I am not an attorney, but I’ve sat through trials. Usually, there are witnesses and documents entered into the record. So far, nothing.
But perhaps, with information trickling out of the book written by former White House National Security Advisor John Bolton, his words might open the door to a more open discussion about the facts of the case.
At this point, some senators are suggesting the manuscript be read in private. Sorry, senators, it’s time to reveal the truth in an open forum. We’re all grown-ups. We can handle this.
